Pressure Ulcer Awareness
Overview
Despite progress in the management of pressure ulcers they remain a significant healthcare problem, with over 1,300 new ulcers reported each month (Source NHS Digital) with up to 200,000 people developing a new pressure ulcer in 2017/18 (Guest et al 2017). This introduction offers guidance on the causes of pressure ulcers as well as preventative strategies to consider. It is aimed at those with little or no prior knowledge.
Pressure ulcers represent a major burden of sickness and reduced quality of life for people and their carers. However, many cases are avoidable with the right knowledge and if preventative best practice is followed.
This awareness module is aimed at anyone who may be directly or indirectly involved in the care of someone who is at risk.
