Lockout Tagout

Overview

Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) refers to specific practices and procedures to safeguard employees from the unexpected energisation or startup of machinery and equipment, or the release of hazardous energy during service or maintenance activities. This involves isolating energy sources and placing locks and tags on the energy-isolating devices to ensure that the equipment cannot be operated until the locks and tags are removed.

Lockout involves physically locking the device in a safe mode, and tagout involves placing a tag on the device indicating that it should not be operated. The process is a critical component of workplace safety, to prevent accidents and injuries resulting from the release of stored energy.
