Attachment and Separation Anxiety

Overview

A child’s first day at school can be a pretty overwhelming experience. Saying goodbye to their parent or carer might lead to crying or clinginess. Yet this is a normal and healthy stage of development, and many children’s worries and fears lessen over time.

But all children are different, and some may experience more distressing emotions and anxieties about being separated. Older children and teenagers can also display signs of anxious attachment which might interfere with their school life and friendships.

By the end of this course you'll be able to:

  • Define attachment and separation anxiety and its symptoms
  • Explain causes of attachment and separation anxiety
  • List ways to help children and teens manage their anxieties

Why Should I take this course?

Fortunately, there are many ways to ease a child’s attachment and separation anxiety. For example, if they’re crying because it’s their first day at school, keeping calm will help to alleviate their fears. Suitable for parents, carers and teachers, this course will show you some of the causes of separation anxiety and provide tips on how to help.
