Female Genital Mutilation

Overview

Over 100,000 women in the UK between the ages of 15 and 50 are living with female genital mutilation, or FGM. The devastating effects of this brutal practice can follow those who survive throughout their lives – physically, emotionally, and psychologically. In this course we will look at the different types of FGM, why it happens, the impact on individuals and societies, and how professionals can prevent it happening, and support those affected.

Objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe what FGM is and when and where it is performed 
  • Define the socio-cultural context of FGM, including the perception of FGM as a religious obligation
  • List the laws available in the UK to protect women from FGM
  • Describe the devastating impact of FGM on people’s lives
  • Identify an FGM victim or potential victim and follow the required principles when FGM is suspected or has been performed
  • Prevent and work towards ultimately eliminating the practice
