Trauma-Skilled Practice in Scotland

Overview
Welcome to the Trauma-Skilled Practice in Scotland eLearning course. This course will provide you with an understanding of the different types of trauma and how to take a trauma-informed approach in your practice. It will also provide you with insight into the different responses to trauma, as well as the long-term effects traumatic experiences can have on an individual’s life. You will be introduced to your responsibilities in supporting an individual during and following the disclosure of trauma (including the principles of psychological first aid). Finally, you will learn the importance of supporting individuals to live a personally valued life. This course is aimed at members of the Scottish workforce who are required to be trauma-skilled in line with the National Trauma Transformation Programme.
By the successful completion of this course, the learner will have gained an understanding of trauma-skilled practice in Scotland.
This course is designed for those working in Scotland who require level 2 training in trauma-skilled practice.
Learning Outcomes
- To gain an understanding of the impact of trauma
- To gain an understanding of how to ensure the needs of people affected by trauma are prioritised over systems and procedures to reduce the risk of re-traumatisation
- To gain an understanding of the importance of workplaces recognising and addressing the needs of workers exposed directly to traumatic events or the details of trauma experienced by others
- To gain an understanding of how to ensure that people affected by trauma and their dependents have their immediate safety needs identified at the earliest possible opportunity so that they can be protected from further harm
- To gain an understanding of how to support people affected by trauma to safely disclose trauma where appropriate (including those experiencing high distress linked to the memory of past trauma)
- To gain an understanding of how to provide people affected by trauma with a consistent, respectful, and professional relationship that engenders trust
- To gain an understanding of how to encourage natural recovery following trauma and recognise and support individual strengths and resources
- To gain an understanding of how to enable people affected by trauma to access timely care, support and treatment, where appropriate
