Whistleblowing in Schools

Overview

Your school’s safeguarding culture is built on a shared responsibility to remain vigilant for safeguarding concerns. But what happens if you have safeguarding concerns about misconduct, abuse, or illegal activities taking place within the educational environment? And how can you speak up if you’re worried about the management of safeguarding concerns or the presence of unethical behaviour in your workplace?

Whistleblowing is the act of reporting any concerns you have to the appropriate authorities or stakeholders within the school community. It’s a vital part of making sure your school is a safe and nurturing environment for everyone.

Learning what institutional abuse is will help you understand when you need to whistleblow. You also need to be aware of the different ways you can whistleblow so you can take swift, effective action as needed.

By the end of this course, you'll be able to:

  • Identify the signs of institutional abuse, so you know when you should whistleblow to protect students
  • Recognise different whistleblowing referral pathways, so you know what to do if you need to whistleblow
