Self-Harm

Overview

Distressing thoughts or feelings can overwhelm many of us at times. When this happens, it often seems difficult to know what to do or how to cope. Talking through our worries to people we trust generally helps us to manage painful emotions. Yet, this isn’t always easy or straightforward.

If you struggle to communicate how you feel, self-harm can seem like it’s the only way to express things which might be too hard or challenging to speak about. But you aren’t alone in feeling this way, and there is lots of help available to stop this self-destructive behaviour, including this course.

By the end of this course, you'll be able to:

  • Explain the types of self-harming behaviour
  • Identify reasons why young people might self-harm
  • Demonstrate coping techniques and strategies

Why should I take this course?

There are many ways to resist and ultimately overcome the urge to self-harm. If you’re a young person who self-harms and are seeking help, or if you know someone who does and want to help, this course is useful. It can also provide support and advice for parents, caregivers, teachers and anyone who works with young people.
