Legionella Awareness

Overview

Legionella is the bacterium that can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially fatal illness that affects over 250 people a year in the UK. It is important that all employees that could potentially come into contact with man-made water systems are aware of the risks and know their responsibilities with regard to the key hazards associated with Legionella.

This Legionella Awareness e-learning course sets out to provide your learners with a thorough understanding of the dangers associated with legionella and the practical measures they can take to help reduce the risk to them and others.

Through the interactive content, learners will develop their knowledge of Legionella and its associated diseases, building their appreciation of the importance of adhering to relevant health & safety legislation and their responsibilities as employer or employee. They’ll establish where Legionella is found, how people can become exposed and consequently understand the measures they should put in place to help control the risks.

Objectives

• Understand Legionella, the diseases associated with it and some of the key terms used. Review where it can be found, the conditions it thrives on and explore the dangers of exposure and when and where it can occur
• Recognise and establish the risks of legionella, the symptoms or relevant illnesses and what you should do if you recognise them
• Understand the law and why health & safety legislation is so important and appreciate the roles and responsibilities of employers and employees
• Identifying and assessing any potential sources of risk
• Exploring written control schemes and how to use them and examining what can be done to control the risks, including putting in place control measures

This course is suitable for anyone involved in work that may put themselves or others at risk of diseases associated with legionella.
