Course Overview

This presentation is aimed at people who are involved in the use of medical gases within the workplace. Focusing on CD and ZD type cylinders and not on fixed installation use of oxygen or any other portable medical gas cylinders. Offering guidance on the safe methods of cylinder handling and storage, learners will gain understanding of the legal responsibilities with regards to the health and safety at work act 1974. As well as, safe cylinder operating procedures, recognition of dangerous occurrences and essential maintenance and safety checks of cylinders.

The presentation is delivered in four individual sessions. Each session covers a variety of topics including employee duties, cleanliness, flammable gas, safe use, cylinder components, preparing a new cylinder for use, outlets and cylinder storage. This presentation also covers some of the most important topics including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Fire Triangle.

At the end of each session there is a short knowledge appraisal to ensure that learners have gained a sufficient understanding. There will be a graded quiz at the end on your knowledge of each topic covered. On successful completion of this presentation the learner will be familiar with the correct handling and storage of medical cylinders.

The presentation is delivered into 4 individual sessions. There will be a graded quiz at the end of the module, the learner will need at least 80% to pass.

Course Objectives

By the end of this presentation, students will have an understanding of the following areas with regards cylinder storage and handling: 

  • Legal responsibility of employers with regards to the health and safety at work act 1974 and guidance offered by BCGA.
  • Safe cylinder storage and operating procedures.
  • Recognition of dangerous occurences which may affect cylinder safety.
  • Essential maintenance and safety checks of cylinders.
